Our editorial policy reflects our commitment to ensuring editorial integrity and independence, and and this includes not accepting any advertising.
Our philosophy is to provide an up-to-date, independent, credible information about drug-nutrition interactions for healthcare service providers.
We have been publishing information on the medications and nutrition interface since 1996.
Content is currently available electronically and includes, as available, the nutritional aspect in relation to -
- Nutrients affected - which nutrients are affected;
- Adverse effects - that primarily negatively impact nutritional health either directly or indirectly. For example direct effects include nausea, vomiting, etc whilst indirect effects include hyperglycaemia-induced altered vitamin C status;
- Biochemistry - which nutrients have altered status as a consequence of a prescribed medication;
- Pharmacology - how pharmaceuticals affect biological systems. Examples include altered glycaemic status, altered lipid status, altered thyroid function, timing of administration, etc;
- Drug-food interactions - key foodstuffs include alcohol and caffeine, and frequently grapefruit products;
- Drug-nutrient interactions - consequences of the interaction, if available mechanisms of action.
- Impaired swallow reflex recommendations - there is increasing awareness of the importance of appropriate textures for safe administration for those with impaired swallow reflex. Whilst not (yet) a regulatory requirement, pharmaceutical companies are increasingly including this information in their Consumer Information and Product Information documents;
- Enteral feeding recommendations - ditto impaired swallow reflex recommendations.
